WHAT TO SEE AND WHERE TO EAT WHILE IN STOCKHOLM
We spent 4 very relaxed days in Stockholm. We travelled to Skopje and from there we took a low cost flight to Skavsta airport which is about 1 hour bus ride distance from the centre of Stockholm. This is the first Nordic country we have visited and we totally loved it! People were really friendly and willing to help and I completely forgot I was a tourist after the first day. We stayed in an apartment in Solna which is about 10 minutes away from the city center, as it has very good transport
connections. Since we were travelling on a budget and Stockholm is an expensive city, we wanted to book a place for our stay where we could also cook, because eating out was just nonsense in terms of prices.
During our stay we visited Fotografiska, a photo museum for contemporary photography with a great view over Lake Mälaren from the restaurant and bar area. There was an exhibiotion of Martin Schoeller’s portraits of celebrities.
Another museum we went to was Moderna Museet – the museum for modern art. It is located on the island of Skeppsholmen in central Stockholm. Together with the permanent collection we could also enjoy Olafur Eliasson’s works.
We walked around in the Södermalm district, another Stockholm island, where we found a great and affordable place to eat I highly recommend – Kalf&Hansen. On the opposite side of the street there were a number of second hand shops, small galleries and antique shops. On our way to Södermalm we also walked around in Gamla stan, Stockholm’s old town located on a little island. There you could stop by in one of the nice cafes, restaurants and designer shops.
Another budget place to eat worth mentioning is Vigårda – a burger bar in Norrmalm offering a variety of burgers at reasonable prices and a great atmosphere.
If you are spending a couple of days there and you are not staying in the city center, it is recommendable to get the SL Access Card which you can use in a similar way to the Oyster cards in London – you can load it with money and it is much cheaper to travel this way. Also, if you are travelling with a friend – you can both use one card.
